I spend a lot of time reading about politics, religion and the like – surprise, surprise! One of the themes of the right, both in the States and elsewhere in the West is that we are in a state of moral decline.  That gay rights, equality, reproductive rights, feminism, fair wage for fair pay and a myriad of other issues are leading us into a period of moral decline. Only God can save us!

Seems to me, and please correct me if I am wrong, but in reality we are no worse, and probably much better than the times that came before.  The only difference I can see is that we have much more access to information about what is going on……things always happened, previous generations just didn’t get to hear about it in the same way.  Oh and we do have equality (kind of), we do accept people who are not just like us (kind of) and we don’t have kids going down mines or sweeping chimneys.

However, we see people hark back to that ‘simpler’ time. The time of no economic power for women, disenfranchisement for the BAME communities and sexual orientation criminalised.  For me we are not in moral decline, we are actually fairer and stronger and more aware that we have ever been.  Our morals are the right morals – acceptance and fair play! Hurrah (well we are getting there are least:-) )
