Bill Kristol adds his voice to the clamor for a new GOP candidate. C'mon, somebody, anybody, please

On Monday, it was Rich Lowry at the National Review whining because the Republicans haven't fielded their "A-team" for the 2012 presidential contest. Now, William Kristol, the legacy heir of the godfather of neo-conservatism, has joined in:

And it is a moment, as you prepare to cast your vote, for others to reflect on whether they don’t owe it to their country to step forward. As this is no time for voters to choose fecklessly, it is no time for leaders to duck responsibility. [...]

Now is not a time for leaders to engage in clever calculations of the odds of success, or to succumb to concerns about how they will look if they enter the fray and fall short. Now is a time to come to the aid of our country.

If Kristol really wants somebody else, why can't he tell us who? Sarah, Jeb, Paul Ryan? Michael Ledeen? He may not want to tell primary voters how to cast their ballots, but surely he could tell us who he would vote for in the Iowa caucuses or the primaries in South Carolina, New Hampshire and Florida if he had more than the choices who will actually be available. Don't be feckless, Bill, don't duck responsibility.

As long as the rethuglicons pander to RWNJs, their A team will continue to be the same kind of clowns they currently have in GNOP line-up. They deserve what they get; they created their own demise.

This is an old comment (by current standards) but we still haven't seen just who the "leaders of the GOP" Kristol would want to run for president.

Of course, I can't blame Kristol too much. Honestly, I can't think of any Republican who hasn't gone over the edge to pander to the wing nut crowd. Can anyone come up with a name of a Republican who has the qualifications to be president who hasn't gone insane?

Huntsman was only prominent GOP candidate who hadn't been dropped on head repeatedly. But they looked at him like something to scrap off their shoes.

Despite mad ravings of Teanuts, Obama is quite sane and smart. This November, we'll have chance to choose between him and Crazy Train to Hell.

The party that wants to lead America, can't pick a leader worthy of the task.

How embarrassing and sad. So weak. It's like watching a group of losers trying to figure out who is their least offensive loser. Knowing all along that they are a group of LOSERS.

Face it for the republicans to field a reasonable candidate they would have to scour the institutions that house the criminally insane, that is if they haven't already.

listen to bill kristol, 2nd generation neo-con, if you REALLY relish a new war in iran. That is his charter.

Maybe none of the candidates are within his grasp, financial or ideas.

Although Parry and Santorum are gung ho for attacking Iran, as well as sen. graham and DeMento.

I'm happy with the RWNJ status-quo. Watching them carve each other up like holiday turkeys while blowing thru Super Pac cash, the possibility of a brokered convention, and a third party candidate(s) that splits their party like a dropped watermelon. Who knew that the demise of the teapublicans would be by political suicide? How cool is that?

The article may be a month old, but the content is still applicable after yesterday. The GOP is up in arms after Gingrich's victory in SC. The Obama White House knows exactly what they will do in nthe run-up to the general if Gingrich is the nominee. That's what the GOP is afraid of.

Of course, Romney's no better. Nor Santorum or Paul. It really matters not WHO it is, but a Gingrich candidacy would do more damage to the GOP than anything else. Much like Palin did her best to make the GOP a laughingstock, Gingrich would hammer the last nail.

No brains, no morals and no ethics. These are the qualities they bring to the presidency.

Too true, listening to Up this morning and a republican pundit in interviewing people at the polls said that what he heard an awful lot of was that people decided to vote for Newt after he "Put Juan Williams in his Place".

To anyone who still has a heart that cares and a brain that thinks, this is a very disturbing commentary on so many levels.

The GOP are very wise running candidates who appeal to the GOP base, because at this point there is no chance that any "Swing Democrats" are going to vote for anyone but Obama. The race will not include a shot at the "Reagan Democrats" as the election progresses, which means the only way to energize the Right and win this election is to turn out the gun nuts, the bible thumpers, the rednecks, the military, anybody who can't stand communism and can hold a pen to vote needs to be energized.

This election isn't going to be won Reagan-style with crossover voters. This race is going to have to be won Bush-style by demonizing the opponent as a commie pinko unAmerican dirtbag liberal weenie, just like what was done to Commie Kerry and Greenie Gore.

Not at all, you see, when liberals start seeing conservatism unchecked (like they have in the Primaries because the Democrats have none) they go ballistic and start acting like kooks.

You already see this in the ultraliberal "OWS" movement with their stupid-looking black and white smiley masks. They look like total morons who forgot that Halloween was only one day long.

The crazier liberals act, doing things like PETA and their last dumbass thing going after Super Mario for wearing fur (the Tanooki Suit) turns off the sane (relatively speaking) liberals who are rightfully embarrassed by such lunacy.

When the kooks come out of the woodwork, the sane people leave the party. This will cost Obama many, many votes and cause a repeat of the dismal Democrat voter turnout in 2010.

It's that "demoralization" tactic again. A little projection, too, I expect.

The "fringe" on the left is not as big as is stated, and it's the sane republicans who have been PURGED from the GOP, so they can no longer count on them, what with as many as are leaving the party for just that reason. All the GOP have left are the extreme, the fringe.

They've managed to disenfranchise just about everyone in three years, and ramped up the crazy in this last year, so it's more a question of the single-issue voter they have left to count on.

MG's last statement is pure BS. If anything, it applies to the GOP electorate more then anything else.

Uh, no, OWS has something to do with Wall Street. Is MG aware of the trillions handed to Wall Street gamblers by the Federal Reserve? That is where it starts. 1% Translation: Bourgeousie. 99% Translation: Proletariat.

MG is exhibiting a logical fallacy called "The fallacy of the undistributed middle, once removed".

Here is an example: My hat is green. Parrots are green. Therefore, my hat is a parrot. MG says, One percent=bourgeoisie. Communists say, bourgeoisie. Therefore OWS is communist. BUT OWS do not say "bourgeoisie", MG says that. Therefore, the fallacy is once removed. For example, My hat is red but I'll call it green. Parrots are also green. Therefore my hat is a parrot.

"Income Equality Translation: Communism" is false. Communists deny income in any form. "Income equality" has nothing to do with communism. Ergo MG does not know what he is talking about.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need.

If it walks like a duck, swims like a duck and quacks like a duck then it's a duck. OWSers set up communes and call them "Occupations" but they're the same thing.

Anybody looking at the Che Guevara t-shirts and the sponsors of OWS will easily recognize the same set of pinkos that have been trying to push communism in the Western hemisphere for half a century.

It's even more simple than that. They have NO ONE. Who is the leader of what brought this party so far right? Bachmann? DeMint? Rand Paul? There is none. That's the issue.

You keep hearing about Christie's, Jeb Bush, Mitch Daniels-where are they? I suspect they either don't want to run for familiy reasons (who can blame them) don't have the skill set to run a national campaign OR has a family name that just isn't going to excite the electorate (does American REALLY need another Bush as President?) OR would not pass the far right litmus test (purity test if you must) to be a serious candidate.

Bottom line is there is no leadership, no viable candidate from the far right (if they can't come up with a candidate with hatred they have had with the President in 4 years time) that kinda says it all.

It doesn't matter who the republicans run. The 2012 election is going to be about Policies. The Republicans are going to be running the same old Policies that got us into this mess. BTW I understand Republicans just had a retreat that involved WORDS. In other new talking points. You would think they'd have a retreat that focused on New Policies that would help clean this Mess Up they help created and dumped on America. Unpaid for Wars (now they want to go into Iran), Tax Cuts and Subsidies for the rich/corporations, and Deregulations. Beware of Republicans new Wordings that in reality mean the Same Old Thing.

President Obama's Policies are Working. His Foreign Policies (Getting out of these Wars). His Economic Policies even Romney has said the Economy is Improving. The President's Policies are working and would have been better if it had not been for all the Obstruction. Republicans have focused on Making this President One Term, Abortion Laws, Voting Laws, and Union Laws. Nothing to move America forward. Just running a Three Ring Circus. What a Sad Joke for America.

Right wing politics of the type being offered by the current republican candidates is based on fear and ignorance. It's essentially a negative reductionist attitude that is literally self-defeating. After the angry white guys get done voting for the noisiest regressive misogynist they can nominate what will happen next? What would these types of candidates propose to address the economic situation, foreign policy, infrastructure development, and the host of other big issues? You already know the answer to this...it's 0 (zero, nada, nothing) Which is exactly the future of the country with these damaged personalities in charge.

You mean fear and ignorance of things like "Big Oil", "Big Pharma", "Banksters", "The 1%", "Corporatocracy" and other silly bogeymen created by the left who don't really exist except as straw figures?

It's essentially a negative reductionist attitude that is literally self-defeating.

I've got a negative for you: Try -$16,000,000,000,000 which is where our National Debt will be in big red ink by election day this year. We can't afford that. The interest on the debt alone is eating up half of all tax revenues. At this current rate of borrowing, in about 10 years every tax dollar collected will be spent on interest, leaving a big fat ZERO for government.

What would these types of candidates propose to address the economic situation, foreign policy, infrastructure development, and the host of other big issues?

Solve the National Debt and the rest of the issues solve themselves. Until spending is brought under control, there's going to be no money and no resources to tackle any other issue, rendering them all moot.

meangene, Adma Smith's take on the REAL budget problem in this country -

“It is not very unreasonable that the rich should contribute to the public expense, not only in proportion to their revenue, but something more than in that proportion.”

And you REALLY need to stop lying about the national debt, mean. 70% of it lies with THREE presidents, reagan, and the bush dynasty.

Not to mention what composes the debt that meangene is talking about. I don't see any plan to pay for Medicare part D. We got out of one war thus saving billions..and hope to get out of Afhghanistan sooner rather than later. The bush tax cuts are due to expire at years end ALL contributing heavily to the debt.

So before the republican gain ANY credibility on the topic of debt they need to let the bush tax cuts expire, fund medicare part d and make a push to get out of Afghanistan...it would be a good place to start.

Then the republicans need to ensure firms to big to fail never ever ever bring this country to it's knees ever again.

Finally tax rate reform is needed to ensure EVERYONE and EVERY corporation pays it's fair share.

Pipe dream? of course.. the policiticans have little stomach to do what's right. It's easier to blame everyone else.

Not for nothing but at every turn budget wise the democrats have ultimately supported cuts- at times supported even MORE cuts than the Republicans even asked for.

The Bush tax cuts expired at the end of 2010. The current tax cuts are all by Obama's hand. Tax cuts add nothing to the debt. The government spending more money than it has is the only thing that adds to the debt. If the government would live within its means then it wouldn't be in debt, but that solution is just too simple for spend-happy politicians to grasp.

So before the republican gain ANY credibility on the topic of debt they need to let the bush tax cuts expire, fund medicare part d and make a push to get out of Afghanistan...it would be a good place to start.

We've been trying to get the taxes on the poor raised. We've got 47% of Americans who are total worthless slackers and they need to be raided for the loot they've been holding out on paying. Damned poor people skipping out on taxes are freeloaders.

What mean, NO COMMENT on the FACT that Adam Smith, darling of rightwing fanatsy economics, in fact believed that the RICH should pay MORE taxes than the lower classes.

I love how rightwingers NEVER acknowledge simple FACTS and ALWAYS revert to fantasy ideology made up to justify greed and self-absorbtion as POSITIVE attributes. It is NOT for nothing that study after study shows the BEST equiped type of personality to prosper in a republican/libertarian world is a sociopathic one.

Until spending is brought under control

It doesn't matter who they put in office Money will be spent. What matters is how it will be spent. Do you want it spent on Uunnecessary and useless military equipment, Subsidies and Tax Cut for those who don't need it, Wasteful Spending, and Bailouts for those who were irresponsible? Do you want it spent on Jobs, Infrastructure, Education, Security and things that will put people back to work and move America forward and make this economy stronger and safe?

You mean fear and ignorance of things like "Big Oil", "Big Pharma"....

No actually it's fear of others, you know the type of anti-social behavior some kids display which later develops into full blown sociopathic behavior. We have a habit of putting these people in charge of corporations. The ignorance comes from a willful desire to believe nonsense in the face of evidence. We see this behavior from global warming deniers, creationists, and faith-based charlatans whipping up emotional frenzy for their own benefit.

Debt is a tool to enable investment today with the a plan to create value from that investment tomorrow. When we incur debt to destroy expensive equipment, kill people, and reduce the landscape to a toxic mess we throw away that basic business proposition by destroying the fundamental source of value thus doubling down on the waste.

Debt gets solved the same way for everyone: invest in business plans that have a chance to add value in the future instead of destroying present AND future value.

If all this were true, Obama would be ahead by 30 points in the polling.

The Republican candidates all seem unelectable, but Obama is not tremendously far ahead of any of them. He is currently up 11 points on Gingrich, 10 on Santorum , 5 on Paul , and 1 on Romney.

None of these are figures that justify the language and opinions seen on this thread.

the ledbetter act makes it to discriminate against women when it comes to equal pay.

the affordable healthcare act has enabled people with preconceived conditions to obtain healthcare.

do you want me to go on? the only people who do not know what obama has done are viewers of fox news and listeners of right wing talk radio.

You mean the LEAKY project that was to be built by a company KNOWN for shoddy work, that would have employed maybe 5000 HIGHLY SKILLED pipefitters and welders, professions that ALREADY have very LOW unemployment numbers, in TEMP jobs over two years, and that then will employ maybe a hundred or so techs and maintenance people and NO big side employment at refineries (the lowgrade crude refineries ALREADY exist and are at capacity) OR loding facilities (same thing, near capacity and FULL employment).

Yep its IS terrible this boondogle that would have mostly benefitted texas billionaires and Chinese car drivers DID NOT go thru, for now.

The Republican Party's task is to thread a political needle -- find a candidate irrational enough to placate the ideologically self-serving corporate-controlled conservative base as well as the homophobic extremists of the Religious Right, the racist never-say-die birther contingent, and the xenophobic, secession-happy Tea Party loons, yet rational enough to satisfy the rest of America

The current batch of potential Republican candidates is so pathetically weak and so obsessed with coddling both the billionaires and the tea party extremists, Obama needs to be concerned about becoming complacent in his preparations for the 2012 campaign.

There's also Democratic ambivalence - lots of us have been very disappointed that President Obama didn't stand up to the R's early on. His efforts to reason and compromise with extremists have severely limited his accomplishments. Additionally, his failures on civil liberties have been many and grave.

There are quite a few of us who were excited about him in 2008 but now see him as the lesser evil. The thing is, the other evil, the Republican Party as currently constituted, is so very evil that we must ensure they don't acquire any more power than they already have.

I can only offer anecdotal evidence: when you not working, eating macaroni and gravy three nights a week, keeping your thermostat at 65, using your car for travel to work, getting hassled by creditors... you're ready to vote for Homer Simpson, even if you voted for Obama in '08. I certainly understand and sympathize. The current political climate makes it impossible to take the sort of action that has historically worked to alleviate recessions. That situation would not likely change, regardless of who is president.
