Bill O'Reilly Compares 'Witch Hunt' To Fire Ellen Degeneres From JC Penney Ads To McCarthyism

Bill O’Reilly had a particularly pro-Hollywood night tonight, as far as The Factor is typically concerned. After a segment in which he defended Clint Eastwood from claims that his Super Bowl ad was subliminal Obama campaign propaganda, O’Reilly had on Sandy Rios of Family-Pac Federal to explain the call from conservative group Million Moms to get Ellen Degeneres fired as JC Penney spokeswoman, and he was not happy with their argument. “I don’t think that’s the spirit of America,” he objected to Rios, who argued that Degeneres represented immorality.

“What is the difference between a McCarthy-era blacklist and Million Moms” not wanting Degeneres employed, O’Reilly asked. He added that he understood the objection, but didn’t see why the group didn’t just call for a boycott, instead of demanding certain executive decisions from the company. “You’re dodging the essential question… a conservative group in this country is asking an American citizen based upon her lifestyle, and I don’t think that’s correct.” Rios continued to argue that the problem wasn’t Degeneres, but that “we are seeing homosexuality so embedded in our culture in alarming ways.”

Guess he's not wrong 100% of the time...

I thought this was a good line "Is it right for any organization to call for a company to fire a spokesperson that has not done anything wrong?"
So this it's rather rare of me to say this, but I agree with O'Reilly on this one.

He actually does come out with some decent points when he's not schilling for Fox, but when he is in RW attack mode he is just totally off the wall, which seems like it is about 95% of the time.

Bill O'Reilly, Dr Frankenstein himself. The Gouls he help create, are now out of control with unAmerican activity, and are on a terror campaign against any and all, that don't fall in line with their Goose-Stepping!

But it was O'Reilly,Beck and the other bobble heads at Faux News, that inseminated, gave birth and nurtured this monster!

Welcome to our world Bill, better late than never in defense of the Democratic way. Right Wing Loonacy, never has a good outcome. Moderation,Negotiation and Compromise, is the best way for all things Social in nature: ie...political.

OMM is also a thorn in Foxes side as well, as they try to dictate what shows they should be allowed to air as well as commercials they run.

I'm not so sure that O'Reilly is just being a nice guy, maybe moreso trying to marginalize the OMM. The OMM even took issue with a frebreeze commercial because it used "Oh my god" in it. They are petty and harrass corporations full time to follow their religious ideology of hatred.

Because Bill O'Reilly has had cajones enough to go on The Daily Show several times and have a logic based arguments, because he took the side of the Democrats and logic on the debt ceiling debate, I manage to maintain some level of respect for him. He's not a looney, frothing at the mouth, hate-spewing wingnut. That doesn't mean he doesn't have extreme/crazy right wing positions on issues, but at least he's willing to talk and listen and that's the first step to sanity. He doesn't live totally inside that bubble that cannot be penetrated by logic and reason that most on the far right do, and for that, I thank him.

I just can't figure Bill O out sometimes,

Its called having principles and standing firm on your beliefs. A few on the left and right do it. Unfortunately they are not the politicians. If your party or ideology steps out of bounds then you call them on it. No matter if you are a lefty or a righty. I can respect someone's opinion if they stand firm and don't sway with the wind or "party speak". Both sides are guilty of this a lot. That is why it is unusual to see a conservative or a liberal actually put down their party or an ideology within the party when they disagree. I can't believe that conservatives and liberals are 99% "all in" with their parties. It seems like the more partisan is loath to critisize their own party (because somehow they think it weakens them). As for presidents, I think Reagan and Clinton were the last ones to go to war with their own party. And won some too. What would be nice is to have a president who was a President 1st and a Republican/Democrat 2nd. We need a conservative liberal or a liberal conservative not someone at either end. As long as we keep trading one partisan for another we will not get anywhere.

Anti-American? No, as much as I hate Hannity I wouldn't say he is anti-American. I think they just have a different view of America which for the most part would destroy the middleclass, make the top 1% the new lords of Mt. Olympus, would destroy education for the poor and is all around just bat @!$%# crazy! But, not anti-American.

Let's not read too much into Bill's comments here. He is not accepting Ellen's lifestyle. He is not flip flopping and supporting gay rights. His main argument is that JC Penny is a private company and as such, demanding that they change at a corporate level and fire someone just because they don't like them is un-American. He also feels strongly that Ellen has a right to be employed. He suggests they boycott instead.

He isn't against A Million Mom's moral message, he just thinks their actions are a bridge too far. At least he has the balls enough to say it. But let's face it, Bill's commentary comes from the top in Fox News. Just as Beck became a liability for the network, this group attacking American companies has quickly become a liability for them as well. The support for LGBT rights is at an all time high in this country, including among younger conservatives. Fox knows the score and Bill-o is just playing his part.

I suspect Billo's thinking about his reputation and tries to do some mending here and there.

No, as much as I hate Hannity I wouldn't say he is anti-American.

If you're drawing a distinction between what he is and what he does, I take your point. Even if he isn't anti-American in spirit, the nastiness that he propagates and the way he does it--often by questioning the patriotism of others--certainly qualifies for that description. As with all these "media personalities" we do have to consider that they do it for the show value and to get their yokels' attention. IOW, they're in it more for the dough than the message. I don't think that makes them better people--probably just the opposite, but it does offer another way of looking at why they do what they do.

Like most kids even know who Ellen Degeneres is and that she is a lesbian. She is what 50+? When I was kid old people very rarely interested me. The majority of kids that know who she is and that she is a lesbian are probably part of the LGBT community and found her when going to websites to find help from being tortured and harassed non stop all day long while at school.

Hiring a homosexual in no way promotes a homosexual lifestyle. I haven't seen this add but I'm going to guess it doesn't mention that she is a lesbian and that JC Penny loves Lesbians and that JC Penny is the new Lesbian hangout.

Look, Bill O defended tow highly popular public icons, this was not an act of moral courage. It is a straight up business decision. Protect his brand by appearing to be independent of conservatism orthodoxy while backing up two highly respected media icons.... This is not about his moral convictions, it is about brand management and preserving his ratings. He can point to at least one occasion of bucking the anti Obama troupe and coming to the defence of a homosexual. Strategic elements in defending himself from future complaints by his liberal critics that he is biased, with no risk to his conservative standing. Good business decision Bill.

Actually, O'Reilly is an actor (belongs to the Actor's Guild) and is an entertainer. Actually I think He is classified as a Comedian. Degeneres is an entertainer and, also, a comedian, so O'Reilly would defend someone in his own profession. Even Dick Cheney, defended his daughter, who was gay. Now, the real difference between O'Reilly and Degeneres, is Hypocrisy: if you want to be a true blue American you have to walk the talk, and O'Reilly does not on most issues, but there might be hope for him if he came out (for equal protection under the law).

Bill did a great job. He asked good questions that Rios had difficulty answering. If she did answer she would have admitted to herself and the listening audience that this is a witch hunt. Bill made a great point that protesting and or boycotting seems fine but demanding for someone to be fired is wrong. I wish Rios answered the question, but she couldn't. What did you all think of he lame excuse why the Moms did not come on the show? Because they are Moms. Lame...

The man is at heart a fame whore. He loves getting publicity and he loves getting invited to Hollywood events, late night talk shows, parties, launches etc. He hates when he is left out or painted as "uncool" or "past his due date".

He is willing to play "bad guy" to the "Liberal Media" to become rich and famous and cannot go a single week without inviting or invoking Hollywood on The Factor. Bill in person is your drinking, cussing, sexually harrassing Irish, Rat-Pack wannabe who wants to party with the "cool crowd" and gets upset when he is left out.

He certainly has his own beliefs and morals which I don't always agree with but there is less of the extreme BS that comes from Hannity, Schultz and their like. And I agree with him 100% on both the Eastwood ad and JC Pennys choice of spokesperson.

Although, having O'Reilly act like an intelligent man is worlds better than having him act like a spoiled child (which seems to be his norm), I imagine there is some other reason than integrity behind Bill's sudden sane thought. When pigs wallow in a mud pit there are likely a few that are not wallowing as much as the others. However, they still are all pigs wallowing in mud.

i can explain it, the @!$%#ing coward bill o'reilly caught a glimpse of himself in a mirror

lord knows he wouldn't be able to take much more than a glimpse

who in their right mind, after all is said and done, could possibly defend, support, or enable the conservative agenda

and this is not to say that liberalism or the progressive agenda doesn't need to have their own checks and balances

these conservatives should realize that feeling desperate about what the support only reveals how their extreme stances on issues are not the way in which the citizens of a democracy should be governed

common ground and compromise, then corrections when needed

I think it is a bad marketing move for JC Penney. I look at it this way. Women love to shop. JC Penney is a very old store, it's been around forever, so it's part of America, like Macy's. JC Penney is cheap, pretty good quality, low price stuff. So who is JC Penney's market?? Lower income and lower middle class to middle class women, meaning a lot of stay-at-home moms, which tend to be conservative. Shopping is a straight women's thing. Gay women tend to dress like men and could care less about fashion and makeup. Ellen wears men's clothing. So the JC Penny shopper does not relate to her at all. I don't mind she is gay nor that she is gay and married, but I think it's a bad move for JC Penney in terms of appealing to their shoppers. It's all about fashion and jewlrey and perfume. That's their market.

It's like, go into a beauty supply store website and look at the people posting comments on products. It's ALL women, and a lot of women are addicted to beauty products. Trust me. So I'm just saying in order to get a ton of straight women to buy clothing and other items from JC Penny, they should have someone who represents them. Ellen DeGeneres could care less what she wears as long as it is men's clothing and as long as she looks dull and androgynous. I like JC Penney cause I can get stuff for half the price of other stores, and it is pretty good quality. I don't relate to Ellen in terms of fashion, not one bit. And, gay women are such a minority, it's just a good marketing move, IMO. The person selling the products should like the products, be interested in them.

Degeneres's show is immensely popular with those stay-at-home moms, who, conservative or not, probably know and don't really care whether she's a lesbian. Your analysis doesn't hold up.

Well, all my sons shop there.

I don't think you're right at all. Nobody really cares who J.C. Pennies spokesperson is, it's not on their mind while they're shopping.

Whoa!!! Stereotyping much my dear? That's like me saying that all straight women dress in skirts or that all gay males are effeminate.

There are tons of VERY feminine looking women being lesbian as there are tons of masculine looking guys being gay and trust me, I live in South Beach and seen them all.

By the time people are saying things like "I don't think anyone cares who their spokesperson is" I won the argument. By the time they are making it up that Ellen doesn't dress like a man, I give up. You guys lost the argument. Ellen thinks she is a man with a wife. She dresses like a man. It's a stupid marketing idea to have her selling makeup and clothing, IMO.

This should work out just as well as Ellen being a judge on American Idol. Why do they keep giving her jobs that she knows nothing about??

Just because Degeneres is a known fag doesn't mean only fags can shop at JC Penny or that the board of directors are all fags or all the employees are fags. As has been pointed out not all Englanders are fags.

For those who are suffering cognitive dissonance at O'Reilly comparing the call against Degeneres to a witch-hunt, I really sympathize and am somewhat shocked myself. But don't let it shake your world too hard.

O'Reilly remains an ass-hat and a modern day Pharisee. The fact is that people like him, Coulter, Pat Robertson, and Tom Coburn all serve a valuable service in their various forms of right-wing zealot ideologue ass-hatry.

As far down the road as they are in the wrong direction, their views are not absolute. When they start sounding reasonable and criticize something as being too far to the right, LISTEN TO THEM. Their address is 703 Whackadoodle Right-Wingnut Lane. They are absolutely comfortable with political and religious fascism, so when they say something is far to the right of what they are comfortable with...LISTEN. Its not that they have come to their senses and recognized the error of their ways, they haven't. It's that what they are talking about IS JUST THAT BAD!
