Karen Handel, a top lobbyist for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation, has resigned following the group’s decision to restore funding to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, according to The Associated Press.

Handel was the former Republican attorney general of Georgia. She ran for the state’s governorship in 2010, but lost to Democrat Nathan Deal.

Too little, too late. The curtain has been pulled back on Komen, its founder, and how it disburses its donations as a middleman. PP only received a small pittance of the $400 million Komen raked in yearly.

Very interesting read on Brinker at link below.

http://southernstudies.org/2012/02/flashback-how-the-komen-foundation-fights-health-reform-and-fails-cancer-patients.html

Despite proclaiming herself before a 2001 Congressional panel as a "patient advocate for the past 20 years," demanding access to the best possible medical care for all breast cancer patients, Federal Election Commission records show the Komen Foundation and its allies lobbied against the consumer-friendly version of the Patients Bill of Rights in 1999, 2000 and 2001. Brinker then trumpeted old friend George W. Bush in August 2001 for backing a "strong" Patients' Bill of Rights, while most patient advocates felt betrayed.

Brinker's support of Bush should come as no surprise, since Bush nominated Nancy Brinker for a U.S. Ambassador post just less than one business quarter earlier, at the end of May 2001. The President also no doubt helped toast Brinker's Congressional approval for the Hungary position on Aug. 3, 2001, less than 24 hours after the House version of the Patients' Bill of Rights, dubbed "the HMO bill of rights" by critics, passed on Aug. 2, 2001.

Jane Abraham...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Abraham

Second, sitting on Komen's Advocacy Alliance Board is Jane Abraham, the General Chairman of the virulently anti-choice and anti-science Susan B. Anthony List and of its Political Action Committee. Among other involvements, Abraham helps direct the Nuturing Network (sic), a global network of crisis pregnancy centers known for spreading ideology, misinformation and lies to women facing unintended pregnancy. Also on the board of Nuturing Network (sic) is Maureen Scalia, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Amen to that. As with Komen, I advise those that still don't believe; if you dance to the music, you will have to pay the Piper. By bringing these right wing ideolouges on staff, this turmoil was inevitable.Everything the right wing touches, turns to crap.

The same can be said for the U S House of Reps...

Ari Fleischer is still at Komen, correct? If so, why?

Answer: 1. because SKF is filled with republicans; 2. he gets a fat paycheck (thanks for all those well meant donations that you thought might acctually do some good, but are just going to keep the like of Ari well fed), and 3. who else would have his sorry a$$.

I, and I feel certain that the majority of poor and working class women, who themselves need PP, have a loved one or friend who does, are relieved that this vicious cancer in Koman's own body has been removed. I am sure that while it is intended to look like a voluntary act on Handel's part, even the wording of her resignation is rather hostile and defensive as the idea that Koman reascended their decision, and that her wishes were repulsed by the majority of the decent men and women in America, and I have no doubt, around the world.

I was also appalled to read that Ari Fleicher is also on their payroll. The man is even more rabid toward the rights of women to control their own bodies, thus, more than willing to condemn thousands of women to die from breast cancer because of his own personal beliefs.

Handel admitted her part in the decision to cut funding of PP, she tried to make it sound like everyone on board was 100% in agreement with her and highly supported contriving a way to cut off PP without it being obvious that it was an outright political and/or religious based means to cut off PP funds because of their own personal bias toward PP But, the two people who immediately quit/resigned as soon as the decision to stop funding was announced, and the number of their affiliates across the country who refused to stop funding PP, proves that her insistence that everyone at Koman, and it's affiliates, supported the idea, is a total lie. Or I should say, another lie, as there seems to be nothing coming out of Koman's end but lies. And the more Handel tried in her letter of resignation to convince that she was right, and that it was not a political move, the more her own words confirmed it.

But, as MoCowgirl said, Handel's resignation is too little too late. The severe damage has been done, the people behind Koman have been exposed for the religious and/or political bigots and flat out politically motivated people they are, as they would let innocent women, and men, die for their own political or religious ideology.

That Handel tried to save herself even more personal ridicule, she publicly rejected the severance package she was offered by Koman. However, I truly can't help but think that it was merely a ploy to try to assuage the public, and that she will indeed be taking something under the table. People like Handel, who are in it not just for the money, but, for their own personal gain and to promote their own agenda, just don't turn down money they think they are wholly entitled to. And it is obvious by her own words that Handel feels she has been unfairly dealt with by Koman in their decision to reverse cutting off of the grants to PP, and deserves everything she can get from them. But, when her own more than obvious acts of bigotry and political bias makes her the main subject of hostile donors and supporters, you can understand her desire to pretend to make nice.

IMHO, the even more troubling part, is that Karen Handel did not do all this alone. She was obviously successful in her efforts to adversely influence and/or control the political ideology of the parent organization, but, she did not make the decision alone. Brinker was also a major player, as were the other board members who were part of the scheme that backfired big time in their faces by repulsing large numbers of their big donors and public supporters, and still threatens to destroy their organization.

While Handel's leaving is a good beginning, there are still those on board who were, and still are, willing to put poor women and men at risk of dying from breast cancer by trying to destroy PP for their own personal beliefs and/or agenda. While Brinker is the founder of the organization, she has proved that her own personal political beliefs are more important than the health of poor women and men and helping to provide free cancer screening for them, which she so adamantly claims is the heart of the organization's 'Mission'. It seems that her political preferences, and that of others a the top of the organization, take priority and play an even bigger part in the 'Mission' of the organization.

Brinker found out that they are not too big to fall, and that they can't hold American women and men hostage to their own political ideology, no matter how big they are. Koman itself let politics come into play when they deliberately contrived to create a new policy to try and hide their true intent. They thought they were far more intelligent than the average American people and that no one would be able to see what they were doing, or why. They too, underestimated the intelligence of the American people who exposed it for what it really was, and why.

I am glad to see that their many affiliates have, and are, standing by their funding commitments to PP. They truly put their parent organization to shame.

Karen Handel, who had denounced Planned Parenthood as a former gubernatorial candidate in Georgia, said in her resignation letter and later interviews that she was actively engaged in the efforts to cut off the grants.

"I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it," Handel said in her letter. "I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen's future and the women we serve."

And

Komen Founder and CEO Nancy G. Brinker said she accepted Handel's resignation and wished her well.

"We have made mistakes in how we have handled recent decisions and take full accountability for what has resulted, but we cannot take our eye off the ball when it comes to our mission," Brinker said in a statement. "To do this effectively, we must learn from what we've done right, what we've done wrong and achieve our goal for the millions of women who rely on us."

And

According to the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of repercussions, a driving force behind the move was Handel, who was hired by Komen last year as vice president for public policy after losing a campaign for governor in Georgia in which she stressed her anti-abortion views and frequently denounced Planned Parenthood.

But

Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Andrea Hagelgans declined to comment on the resignation.

Is it me...but aint it weird, but why is everyone talking but the person who is supposed to talk?

"To do this effectively, we must learn from what we've done right, what we've done wrong and achieve our goal for the millions of women who rely on us."

I seriously think that what they will do next time is not to make their dirty dealings public. They will do all they can to keep such decisions behind closed doors as much as possible to avoid any backlash from the public.

I think that they are missing the entire reasoning behind the public backlash. It was not just pressure from pro-choice groups that Handel and others who supported the cut off claim. I twas decent, hard working, caring American people from all walks of life, with all type of personal opinions, religious and political beliefs. It was from the heart of what America is all about.

What really pissed the people off is that the 'new' policy regarding 'investigations' was a totally obvious, blatant excuse to cut funding due to the 'Christian' bigots rabid fear of and intolerance of abortion. But, the only way that they could think of to get the backing of the 'Christian' people is to say it was because of the 'investigation' of PP. However, that was a huge lie in itself. There is no criminal Federal or Congressional investigation of PP. Rep from Fla, Cliff Sterns, a GOPTeaBag religious and anti-abortion fanatic, who is trying to convince the world that PP is spending Federal funds on abortions at all their facilities. That in itself is a lie, as not all PP facilities have abortion facilities. But, again, there is no criminal investigation of PP, nor have any prior investigations brought about by the Republicans trying to bring down PP due to their bias against PP because is does some medical abortions, ever resulted in any criminal charges against PP. So the entire exercise by Koman to defund PP based on it's being 'investigated' was and is a bald face lie, as no official investigation has been initiated by the government, or anyone else. Thus, their ploy hugely backfired on them, and the pig sty mud on their faces stinks big time.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/27/planned-parenthood-investigation-government-resources_n_984002.html

Here are some other facts on PP that expose the lies that pro-life organizations spread: http://factcheck.org/2011/04/planned-parenthood/

I don't expect Koman's ambitions to defund PP to change at all, they will just be more covert and backdoor methods about how the do it going forward.

The annual charitable tax return, Form 990, is open to the public for foundations like Komen, and they have to show every organization they give money to (if I remember correctly, it's on Schedule I).

VerbalBarb - I hope they will be checking going forward, and I truly think more people will be.

In their attempt to be coy about what they were trying to do, their true intent became crystal clear, and exposed them for what they really are. IMHO, the hypocrisy between their 'Mission' and their actions is reason enough for people to continue to have doubts from here on.

Handel's policies were well known - she is an anti abortion, right wing activist.

Therefore, Handel was hired by SGK in tacit agreement with her public profile, and agreement with her anti woman policies.

SGK made a public declaration when they hired Handel that they agreed with her public policy position.

I, and millions of other women will not support SGK again.

#4.3 - Tue Feb 7, 2012 7:34 PM EST
Tink-2285193

I can't see myself supporting SGK again any time soon. I will, however, continue to actively support the fight against cancer, be it breast cancer or any other form, and for the right of all women to maintain full rights and control of their own bodies. To support the poor and provide free health services to them wherever possible.

My support is not tied to money, but, to the good that it an pay for to the benefit of others. I am not a rich person, I'm retired and on a fixed income, so I try to make every dollar I give count in some constructive way to help others. Not to pay huge sums to people who use their own personal religious and political beliefs dictate where my money is spent or on whom.

First, to be clear, it is not their money...it is money donated to the organization for a specific purpose. I don't donate money to make the executive staff obscenely rich which penny pinching what they give to the charities or causes I donated to. It is not their money, they are supposed to only act as agents to deliver the money I donate to the organization that I donated the money for, not one of their own personal choice. I never give money without making sure I designate what it is to be used for. I have found out over the years that if you don't specify or specially designate who the donation is to go to, they can use the money any way they like, even to paying themselves outrageous salaries, pensions and severance packages, while the charity the money was intended for gets pennies.

So, make sure that you always designate what the donation is for, because, by law, if you specify what your donation is to be spent for, they have to spend the money on that specific charity. The Red Cross was my learning point on this, when in San Diego a few years back there were huge brushfires in the Alpine Mountain area, with extensive loss of property and human lives, the Red Cross was calling for donations to help the victims of Alpine victims. But, the Red Cross was doling out mere pennies and even refusing to pay some victims, while holding the money back for use for "Administrative costs", like the $400,000.00+ salary of the head of the local branch and her opulent lifestyle, the regal offices and over the top pay for the rest of the admin staff. The donors and victims raised hell at how the money was being used and in the end the Red Cross head was fired, a full investigation was made, and the people for whom the money had been donated for were eventually given the full amount of what they were rightfully entitled to receive.

Indeed, it is hard to keep track of how and where organizations spend your money, but, they are required to keep records of specific named donations and monies paid out must account for that specific donation amount to the specified charity or organization. The IRS requires that all charity organizations must specify what they spend for operating expense.

If you want a keen insight as to how our donations are spent, look for those charities that are listed with the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Charities that are accredited by the Better Business Bureau must meet the 20 standards for Charity Accountability and these include how donations are distributed. At least 65% of the Charity’s total expenses must be spent on program activities and no more than 35% on fund raising. Here is an Index of the charity organizations in the BBB: http://www.bbb.org/charity-reviews/national/

Another good check list: http://www.charitynavigator.org/

It is one thing for the victims in need help getting the short end of the deal, but, don't be a victim of the charity yourself. Make sure that you donate to a reputable organization.

However, in the case of SGK, until Handel was hired and spread her own hate and bias into the organization, there was no reason to suspect SGK or not doing the right thing. But, as of now, I do not trust them, and certainly would not donate one penny to them. My money will go to PP and be specified for the specific service of my choice, such as 'For Breast Cancer Screening in the Memo area of my check, or if credit card donation, you an specify what it is for. They must show that that donation was spent for that specific service and nothing else. If there is no specification made as to where the money is to be spent, then they can use it for whatever service they choose.

She was not a lobbyist. She was hired in April 2011 to be their VP of Public Policy. Handel was the main force behind the decision to defund Planned Parenthood and the attempt to make that decision look nonpolitical. (Epic fail!!!!) She's had it in for PP for years and even ran for Governor of Georgia on an aggressive pro-life anti-PP campaign.

The SGK will take years to recover from the damage she did to the Organization public reputation.

Since 1982 when our youngest daughter's Godmother died of breast cancer, we have supported the Komen Foundation. However we were not aware that our contributions were being redirected to Planned Parenthood. Neither is it well publicized that Planned Parenthood earmarks these funds from Komen for breast exams. Is this a fact or a spin? Planned Parenthood is identified with abortion which our family does not support . There are myriad alternative agencies that subsidize breast exams for women without health insurance including Catholic Charities. Planned Parenthood has demonstrated enormous fund raising capability and lobbying leverage from their supporters in government and the private sector. Abortion is not health care and delivers death; breast exams certainly save lives. By Komen reversing this decision our contributions henceforth will go elsewhere.

So, it is not cool to give money to an organization that provides women their constitutionally guaranteed right to safe and legal abortion, but contributing money to an organization that has facilitated and covered up the largest and most widespread case of child sexual assault in modern history is fine?

Don't you just love the moral high ground?

The real irony is that if a Catholic Priest were to have gotten a young woman pregnant, he probably would have had her taken to Planned Parenthood to cover it up. The he would likely have gotten a promotion and a transfer to another parish.

PP gives vouchers for women to have mammograms any donation given to PP for only breast exams has to be used for exams, their books are open so that people and organizations can give to Planned Parenthood without worry about where their donations are going.

I know this is probably going to piss off some women, but I'm going to say it anyway.

Look at Karen Handel.

It is very easy for her to be against women having the right to make their own decisions about reproduction.

She will never, ever have to worry about that because she is so fat and ugly that nobody would ever consider @!$%#ing her.

There is not enough beer on earth to make me have sex with her.

She must have been bit by the "ugly dog", right before getting run over by the "ugly truck", just prior to falling down the "ugly manhole" into the "ugly sewer" where she was gorged on by the "ugly alligator".

She should just shut up and go back into the cave where she came from. What is doing out of the kitchen anyway?

It doesn't piss me off; it's just kind of sad that's all someone is capable of adding to the discussion.

Pablo: Attacking her for her looks is NOT the best way to show support of women. We have to deal with that kind of crap in EVERY aspect of life. The very fact that you know it will piss women (and a lot of men, too) should tell you that it's not a fair way to argue the point. "Beauty" is a standard that is not held for men, but it seems that every time a woman is in the news, that's the very first thing that they are either attacked or praised for.

Yeah, actually I would.

Besides, my feeling on men with regards to abortion is that they should have no say in the matter whatsoever.

Sorry, maybe I am just an insensitive cad, but the only thing that annoys me more than men whining about abortion, is when overweight unattractive women who have just about no chance whatsoever of actually getting pregnant blabber about abortion.

I don't expect everyone to agree or like my opinion.

Ok, tell me how a 30 year old unattractive male nerd is doing with the ladies.

Women talk all the time how they are constantly held to a standard for beauty.

Well, look at any magazine cover and who do you see?

George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Ryan Goseling.

You don't see Michael Cera on the cover of GQ.

Interesting resignation letter. Handel in as much as accuses Brinker of gross mis-management of the situation. Then she plants the flag on the moral high ground by disclosing that Koman had already been discussing a severance package with her, and she is declining it.

A severance package? From a charity? Am I the only one that thinks this organization is playing Madoff with donors' money?

Brinker must, absolutely must go, to clean up this mess. And without a severance package. Nice to know that even in the world of charity, there is the 1%, and they have their greedy SOBs.(/s/)

Let me go further in explaining the outrage. Say you give a $100 check to Komen to fight breast cancer. You can rest assured that 23 dollars of that $100 will go directly to pay for Brinker, her staff, and severances. That's 23 dollars of yours that will not go for research or treatment. Any charity that actually acts as a charity will have that overhead figure somewhere under 10%, preferably around 5%. No one expects someone to work full-time for a charity and not be compensated to some extent, but 23% really equates Komen to any run-of-the-mill televangelist.

Better to research the charities, and pick one that is more driven to give your dollars directly to where they will do what you expect them to do.

I agree that the skimming off the top and large salaries for SGK leave less for actual support of breast cancer.

This does not mean that SGK has not brought an awareness of breast cancer to the mainstream. They have done this to a wonderful degree.

However now that the organization has embraced a right wing anti women ideology, they do not deserve continued support.

Too little, too late. The curtain has been pulled back on Komen, its founder, and how it disburses its donations as a middleman. PP only received a small pittance of the $400 million Komen raked in yearly.

I must agree. I am leery of these huge "clearing house" charities to begin with; the highly partisan political motivations that have been at work just beneath the surface at SGK will affect my giving on a permanent basis. Too many local health charities I can give to- and keep a closer eye on.

I love local charities I give to one called "Ahead with Horses" they provide and care for horses which are used for children with emotional problems and kids with disabilities to teach the kids how to ride horses and how to care for the horses.

They help the kids get in touch with their feelings I know it sounds silly but they do amazing work with the kids through the horses.

They have a large overhead and almost all of their donated money is used for their cause and very little is used for advertising or salaries.

There are lots of charities that do better work then SGK which seems to be in it only for the money and not the cause.

Not to get off the main topic too far but the benefits of equine therapy for developmentally delayed children and adults is well documented.

People who ordinarily shun physical and emotional closeness with other people can often accept it from a horse. The bond between a developmentally delayed person and a horse helps develop mutual trust, respect, affection, empathy, unconditional acceptance, confidence, responsibility, assertiveness, communication skills and self-control. Effective communication with a horse involves patience, understanding, attention, forgiveness and consistency - abilities that any person will find useful throughout their life.

During interactions with a therapy horse there is lowering of blood pressure and heart rate, increased beta-endorphin levels, decreased stress levels, reduced feelings of anger, hostility, tension and anxiety, improved social functioning, and increased feelings of empowerment, trust, patience and self-esteem.

Riding the horse for the phycially disabled stimulates the trunk and legs of the person much like walking does. Riding improves over all balance and blood flow to the legs.

Donations to your local equine therapy program is a great way to spend your donation money.

Karen H. has brought attention to the fact that PP actually handles breast exams/referrals for mammograms for poor women, and that they are an alternate charity for people who want to contribute for such services. She did them a favor.

Last week, Phil Gingrey got his five minutes. He must be getting ready for re election, and you know how these Rebels love to see someone go up againts the President. Now you have. It should not be forgotten that Komen has still suspended all funding for any research that includes stem cells. They're hobbling science from discovering a cure, again, for a political end. Then again, longer to find a cure, the longer they can pull down huge salaries.
