In the “closed circuit world on the right,” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow is often the subject of ugly denigrations. Whether it’s being mocked for her sexual orientation, her name, or evenher education, right-wingers can’t get enough of slamming her.

During a political discussion at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) today, Fox News pundit and conservative columnist Cal Thomas continued the ugliness. After the Heritage’s Genevieve Wood played a quote of Maddow eloquently debunking the conservative argument on contraception, Thomas said:

I’m glad that you played the Rachel Maddow clip because I think she is the best argument in favor of her parents using contraception. I would be all for that. And all of the rest of the crowd at MSNBC, too, for that matter.

No one on the panel condemned the comment.

It is in fact such a liberal abomination, that anybody who disagrees with Republicans' position on this today, according to the folks at Fox News, should never have been born at all. [...]

That happened at CPAC today, at the Conservative Political Action Conference today. Mr. Fox News person speaking there, I am sorry that you feel that way about me that you wish I had never been born. Personally, I'm glad that you were born.

Otherwise how would Republicans get the special Fox News bat signal that it's time to be outraged now, about what used to be Republicans' own policy idea.

I find it funny that Cal Thomas can joke about something that they're supposed to be supporting... a pro-life position... very funny (sarcasm)

Well it seems Ms. Maddog is one of those that "can dish it out buy can't take it"

At least she is willing to spare the male population from reaching for another bag,

OK, so her Piled Higher and Deeper degree was actually in an area of study where they exalt piling it higher and deeper. It worked, now she gets to spread her BS to masses. The left of lefties would no doubt be proud of that accomplishment.

It think that covers the trifecta. Somebody queue up the next joke for the thinned skin and perpetually offended crowd.

Give me a conservative that stands by their ideology, walks the walk NOT JUST talks the talk, and maybe people will stop poking fun at them. Maddow does a good job of showing people's hypocrisy.

The only thing conservatives of this ilk seem to be good at is-

    1. name calling
    2. De cry the Constitution when something doesn't go their way

    3. Making asses of themselves

Dear Mr Thomas - would you want someone to say that of YOUR children?

We'll then, let's break it down for you soph.

Mr. Fox News person speaking there, I am sorry that you feel that way about me that you wish I had never been born.

Maddog - not believable in the slightest - definitely not sorry - besides that he's not wishing she had never been born anymore than Maddog is glad that he was when she quips.

Personally, I'm glad that you were born.

Again flat out false. In context the meaning is entirely derogatory as a set up for the next line.

Otherwise how would Republicans get the special Fox News bat signal that it's time to be outraged now, about what used to be Republicans' own policy idea.

So in truth the only real sin is Thomas using such a cheap throwaway line to dismiss Madcow in the first place. So her response is clearly equally mean spirited and indicative of her inner attack dog mentality and inability to let dip@!$%#tery slide on by.

So really no mystery after all at least for those that .... We'll just leave it at that.

And ultimately I could give a crap about the Mad One except as a substitute for Syrup of Ipecac. How's that for finding a silver lining.

      Oliver:

      the Mad One...Maddog

Kindergarten playground-level name-calling - the last resort of those with nothing intelligent to offer to the discussion.

And ultimately I could give a crap about the Mad One except as a substitute for Syrup of Ipecac.

Then why are you commenting on the subject at hand? She seems to have struck a nerve of some sort.

The present GOP/TP seems to be terrified of women who are not under the explicit "authority" of a dude, and so, like a child, it lashes out at that which frightens it.

The Heritage’s Genevieve Wood's is an example of the kind of woman it supports - she faithfully parrots what her (male) handlers tell her to spout. Nice and obedient. Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin - the same. No fear of puppets.

And I have plenty of reasons to comment but it's not anything you need to know about.

Plus, I guarantee you at least one thing. I've never been afraid of a women for political reasons, (although there have been some sasquatches that I would consider scary) so your comment just looks ridiculously silly.

Well, it might interest all of you to know that Cal Thomas called Maddow and apologized. She felt that he sincerely meant it. This was AFTER Greta van Susteren stated on her Fox News show that he owed Maddow an apology.

I guess we see who has the true class here.

Maddow, whom I like, uses a flawed analogy, akin to "if a million people do it, it must be right." On the contrary, "if a million people do a foolish thing, it is still, a foolish thing." Cal Thomas, Rick Santorum, et al, nor the unconfirmed plethora of so-called "Catholic Universities" represent the Magisterium of The Catholic church.

Much like what Bush did in banning stem cell research for all organizations that do business with or accept federal money, so is Obama by issuing an Executive Order forcing Catholic institutions who take federal dollars, to supply birth control. This is a coldly calculated political move by the corporate tool, Obama, meant to help his corporate benefactors in both the pharmaceutical and insurance industries, tap into the lucrative catholic institution market.

The women in the video whining about birth control, make me laugh, what morons. I'm female and have worked at some high profile jobs where BC was NOT covered as a benefit...and guess what? I bought BC out of my own pocket, it's just not that expensive. There are also many clinics such as Planned Parenthood that will supply it free or at a reduced cost.

Maddow is grasping at straws here.

Wrong. You apparently don't understand what an "Executive Order" is.

            1 - Here's a definition: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Executive_order

            2 - Here's the Bush EO; http://img.slate.com/media/40/13435-stemcells.pdf

I completely understand what an Executive order is. What the @!$%# does that have to do with anything about the 'banning of stem cell research'.

When Bush wrote the EO, it ENDED ALL STEM CELL RESEARCH in the United States.

And what Obama did with his Executive Order is that he issued an interpretation that the ability of a religious institution to not provide BC through their insurance policies ONLY was valid if it was the religious organization itself, and not an enterprise owned by that religious organization.

So, church is allowed to not provide coverage, but the church's hospital, or the churches schools, are SEPARATE entities, and therefore do not qualify for that exemption. If you want to take that further, this fundamental concept of this law would also prevent a Madrassa from being set up in the US, because all accredited schools must follow the curriculum of the state that they are located in. (yes, that is not related to the law, but the concept is there).

              Wrong again, to wit;

              1) No. 2:Blocking Stem-Cell Research
              Executive Order 13435 (PDF)

What the order says: In August 2001, Bush issued a rule Limiting federal funding for embryonic-stem-cell research to existing colonies of such cells. Five years later, he expended the first veto of his presidency to reject legislation served up by a Republican Congress to ease those restrictions. This subsequent executive order a year later, issued the same day he vetoed the legislation a second time, encourages research into alternative measures of creating pluripotent stem cells. The order directs the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institutes of Health to prioritize research consistent with Bush's previous directives and devote resources to finding other means of creating human stem cells. - http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/recycled/2009/01/ten_to_toss.single.html

Note the words, "federal funding", it did not apply to all embryonic stem cell research.

              2) You obviously do not understand that the Catholic Church does NOT own or run the multitude of different institutions that carry the Catholic name. They legally SPONSOR such groups and if they do not abide by the terms and conditions of such sponsorship, the church can legally remove it.

In the case of Birth Control, if a sponsored organization does not follow it's ecclesiastical teachings, they have every right to remove said sponsorship. Obama's EO was a direct assault on Catholic hierarchy done for the express purpose of allowing his corporate benefactors, the insurance and pharmaceutical industry, to tap into the lucrative Catholic market.

most catholic institutions already provide birth control, but did you see the latest, the catholic church's position isn't just about the church, they want to force ALL companies to not provide contraception coverage.

As for the first part, did you realize that ALL embryonic stem cell research is government funded.

It is like saying, any facility that takes any government funding can't provide abortions, which basically means that it would require that a facility be set up that ONLY PROVIDES abortions. It's an end run. It is worded in a way that makes it look like one thing, but is really, because of the details, far more comprehensive.

Prove it. Everyone seems to be repeating this same talking point then site Georgetown and DePaul as examples. Sorry, there are thousands of Catholic institutions in the US. Two or even twenty do not a majority make. Where's the studies that say this? I went to a large Catholic university that did NOT provide it for their students or employees.

                  2) As for the first part, did you realize that ALL embryonic stem cell research is government funded.

Wow, this is classic. I'm just supposed to take your word on this? I don't think so. a) prove it, b) read up on stem cell research. http://www.wpi.edu/Pubs/E-project/Available/E-project-050409-141307/unrestricted/The_Economics_of_Stem_Cells.pdf Yes, it impacted all of the institutions both private and but in no stretch of the imagination does the government fund ALL research facilities.

This is going too far off topic.

Ms. Maddow is an archetype of the woman that today's GOP/TP hates and fears - note Oliver's comment above demonstrating that hate and fear.

She's independent, she speaks her mind, she is highly educated and articulate. She doesn't kowtow to the dudes like their females do. I have no doubt that running through the minds of many of them is the old ugly misogynist belief that a good *$%^ing would "fix" her. At the very least, she should shut up and just taken whatever crap is thrown her way - how dare she speak up!

The Republican party was not always like this - it once gave us luminaries such as Margaret Chase-Smith, the two gentlewomen from Maine, and other statesmen and women who commanded respect, even when their policies left room for disagreement.

Today's GOP/TP is a mess of crazies, trampling its moderates in its mad stampede off the cliff.

That has NOTHING to do with her message. Her personal attributes are meaningless because alas, she aint going to be sleeping with them, so there is no point worrying about it.

Instead of attacking her, they should be addressing her message. Her message was about as biting as they can get, and quite frankly, they can't address it, therefore they resort to personal attacks.

Cal Thomas apologized. This is a good thing. Better if it hadn't happened to begin with, of course. She's accepted the apology with grace.

I love a class act. Greta Van Susteren deserves kudos as well.

Cal Thomas wasn't always like this. Abrasive, yes. Abrupt, yes. Sometimes infuriating, yes - but not on the level of Limbaugh, Savage, and the like. He allowed himself to be caught up in the race to be nastier than the next, but perhaps he caught himself in time to keep from going over the precipice.

He is forever on some rant and is ALWAYS derogatory towards liberals and democrats. An apology is all well and good, but sorry is only a word & its what someone does after they say sorry that matters. We will be watching to see if what he says is what he does. IMO he will continue on with his snide, hateful and demeaning remarks. Its who he is and a fine example of what many "born again Christians" are today.
