At the recent National Prayer Breakfast, Eric Metaxas, author of the biography on German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer, compared the Holocaust to legalized abortion. Bonhoeffer discovered religion while living in New York and returned to Germany to speak out against Hitler. The right sees Bonhoeffer as a role model because he fought against homosexuality, abortion and other social issues.  

Bonhoeffer takes on legendary status among conservatives because he was ultimately put to death by the Nazis in a concentration camp and is seen as a martyr for dying for his religious convictions.
