Silly street names, drives, lanes and meadows. Which one would you like to live in if given the choice? Maybe you have an example of another silly street name you want to add to the list. Some of them are outstanding.
Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate, how great a name is that? It means
Whip-ma-whop-ma-gate is the shortest street in York. The saxon words mean “neither one thing nor the other”. In the 16th century, the name was 'Whitnourwhatnourgate,' but the present form emerged when the area became the site of the city where petty criminals were publicly flogged.
That is my favourite, as it has such interesting origins, and is such an unusual use of language. But it is not as funny as some on the list! Which is your favourite? Add to the list if you can!
