No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite. – Nelson Mandela
On the day that Nelson Mandela has returned again to hospital I was reminded of the above famous quote.
In theory it is a splendid idea, isn't it? We can take all the haters, have a nice conversation about how wrong they are, give them a big comforting hug and hate becomes love. The racism, homophobia, sexism or whatever hate drum the hater beats disappears and love is miraculously in its place.
I do agree that love comes more naturally to the human heart than hate. However I think people train themselves to hate over long periods of time. A default position of hate is the comfort zone. Acceptance and love of other is the unchartered waters of the human condition.
Can people learn to love instead of giving into hate? Probably. The bigger question is do they want to?
